The birthplace of Arabica coffee, Ethiopia produces some of the most exciting coffees in the world. The highland region of Yirgacheffe produces what is considered the best high grown coffee in southern Ethiopia. This coffee is from the Gedeo zone, bordered by Sidama on the north, and encircled on the other sides by the Oromia region. The area has a rich history for coffee and is regarded as the birthplace of the coffee bean. After 2008, most of Ethiopia?s coffees (those not privately owned or from farms larger than 30 hectares) legally had to go through the ECX(Ethiopia Coffee Exchange), at which point they lost their traceability. But in recent years, the government has worked to change this, and traceability has largely been restored.Today, a buyer can see the exact grade, washing station and district a coffee came from. This ‘washing’ process, more commonly used in Latin American coffee producers, results in a coffee with a bright clean taste and high acidity.
